ANSWER descriptive Presentations These presentations ask the question “what” The audience wants to know facts, figures, and other data. The topical pattern and the chronological pattern are the two types of descriptive presentations. In a topical presentation in order to keep the audience interested, the presentation should begin and end with the most important topics. The topical presentation is usually used when describing components of people, places, things, or processes. The chronological pattern is used in a time related sequence. Demonstrative Presentations A demonstrative presentation answers “how” questions. Using a demonstrative presentation can sometimes feel like a persuasive presentation. In giving a demonstration in may change the minds of the listeners on how to perform a certain function. Explanatory Presentations A explanatory presentation answers why questions. Typically a cause/effect pattern of organization is used in this type of presentation. A presenter can also use a comparison/contrast pattern. Guidelines for Successful Presentations To ensure a successful presentation these inhibiters should be addressed; noise, adapting to listeners, shared and shared perspectives. As usual the model for strategic communication can be used in regards to presentations. Situational knowledge would include knowing strategies around video and television. Communication Competence would include practice and appearance. And lastly, Anxiety management would include practicing and knowing the material. Persuading Presentations Persuasive presentations encourage listeners to adopt the ideas of the speaker. Persuasive presentations will reinforce ideas, disprove ideas, change beliefs or values, or ask for a call to action. Reinforcement – this type of presentation is used in order to reinforce the decisions, actions or opinions of the audience. Refutation – this presentation hopes to show listeners that a belief or event is misunderstood and thus will change the listeners minds. Change – this presentation hopes to redirect the listeners thoughts or behaviors. Call to Action – this presentation hopes to initiate audience action on a particular subject Persuasive presentations have many forms but the three most common are sales presentations, proposals, and motivational sessions.
